In the name of God, The most gracious, the most merciful.
Hi!
I am Abdullah Altinkaya, an undergrdauate student of history at the Bosphorus university in Turkey and I have designed this web page so as to give information for prospective international high school students considering to come to Turkey for the purpose of their higher education.
Let me try to give you some information about the Turkish universities. In Turkey, there are found around 70 universities out of which a small number are newly established private universities and most of these universities are found in Istanbul and Ankara. However, you may also find at least one university in most major cities of Turkey. A few of these are completely English language universities (almost all of the Private universities and two of the state universities, namely Middle East Technical university and the Bosphorus university). Nevertheless, there are a great number of universities that offer their courses in English (for example, in Hacettepe university there are two departments of Medicine in which one is teaching in Turkish and the other in English).
You may gather more information about a universiy's curriculum by visiting her web site that you can easily find in Yahoo!'s category on higher education.
In Turkey, foreign applicants are asked to sit for a Foreign Student Admission examination (YOS) which is administered by YOK (Council on Higher Education) and the priority of admission is given to students who score higher. This test contains questions in various subjects resembling British "O" level curriculum. Visit www.osym.gov.tr for more information on this examination.
In state universities, foreign students pay tuitions varying from 300USD to 1200USD depending on their departments. In private universities, the range is between 3000USD to 5500USD. Room and Board is not really expensive (I pay around 40USD per month for university dormitory). Part time jobs and scholarships are highly available for foreign students. Foreign students with computer experience, fluent in English are good candidates for most part time jobs available for college candidates.
In Turkey, the admission quota for foreign students is around 4 per department per university. For example, the History department of Bosphorus university accepts 4 foreign students every year. There is great number of foreign students in Turkey coming from places like China, Japan, Indonesia, Jordan, Palestine, Pakistan, India, the Balkan regiond and lots more.
I thank you for your interest in coming to Turkey for your higher education and I am waiting for your letters or suggestion! Please, don't forget to sign my guest book.
